Wine & Spirits – 93 Points

Blended as a mosaic of small, family-owned vineyards in Western Sonoma County, this is gingery with a pollen-like spice. The fruit has the tight feel of a nectarine just coming into ripeness, the wine intentionally reductive and flinty-fresh. This is leesy, spicy, floral and cool. Oct/2023 —Joshua Greene | wineandspiritsmagazine.com

Wine Enthusiast – 92 Points

This harmonious and well-balanced wine opens with light butter, toast and Bartlett pear aromas, then fills the mouth with rich pear and peach flavors accented by vanilla. A full body is nicely paired with good acidity, so the wine works fine as a cocktail or with lunch and dinner. Dec/2023 —Jim Gordon | wineenthusiast.com

Wine Spectator – 91 Points

Everything here fits together seamlessly, with pineapple, lemon curd and peach flavors backed by bright acidity, plus savory overtones of toasted, salted almond and a hint of candied ginger. There’s plenty of intensity on the fresh finish, where the flavors crescendo. Drink now. 7,400 cases made. Mar/2024 —MaryAnn Worobiec | winespectator.com

Description

2021 Patz & Hall Chardonnay • Sonoma Coast

The 2021 Patz & Hall Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast is a refined and expressive wine that showcases the hallmark traits of this cool-climate region. Patz & Hall is renowned for its commitment to small-lot winemaking and vineyard-specific selections, and this vintage is a prime example of their dedication to excellence.

On the nose, the wine opens with lifted aromas of Meyer lemon, white flowers, fresh pear, and subtle baking spice. These elegant aromatics are followed by a layered palate featuring crisp green apple, lemon curd, and a silky texture wrapped in delicate hints of brioche, hazelnut, and toasted oak.

Balanced and vibrant, this Chardonnay captures the minerality and tension typical of the Sonoma Coast AVA, offering both richness and refreshing acidity. The finish is long and clean, with bright citrus energy and a gentle touch of creaminess.

Patz & Hall remains a benchmark producer of high-end Chardonnay in California, and the 2021 vintage reflects their decades-long dedication to quality and terroir. This wine will evolve beautifully in the cellar but is drinking exceptionally well now.

A superb companion to dishes like roast chicken, grilled halibut, lobster with drawn butter, or wild mushroom risotto, this wine is a must-have for collectors and fans of boutique Sonoma Coast Chardonnay.

The Story of Patz & Hall

Patz & Hall was founded in 1988 by four friends united by a shared passion for world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Donald Patz, James Hall, Anne Moses, and Heather Patz combined their collective talents in winemaking, viticulture, and business to create a brand focused on small-lot production and the expression of exceptional vineyard sites across California’s North Coast.

From the beginning, Patz & Hall set itself apart by championing close partnerships with some of the most respected growers in the state. Rather than owning vineyards outright, they chose to collaborate with families who had spent generations cultivating sites with unique microclimates and soils. These partnerships—with names like Hyde Vineyard in Carneros, Dutton Ranch in Russian River Valley, and Zio Tony Ranch in Sonoma Coast—became the cornerstone of the Patz & Hall identity.

James Hall, the founding winemaker, brought a Burgundian sensibility to his approach. Using wild yeast fermentations, extended barrel aging, and minimal intervention, Hall helped elevate the elegance and complexity of Patz & Hall wines. This artisan style, combined with a keen focus on vineyard expression, quickly earned the winery a loyal following and critical acclaim.

As demand grew, Patz & Hall maintained its commitment to quality by continuing to produce limited quantities and staying hands-on with every lot. The winery remained independent until 2016, when it was acquired by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates. Despite the change in ownership, the founding principles of excellence, partnership, and terroir-driven winemaking have remained fully intact.

Today, Patz & Hall stands as one of California’s leading producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their wines continue to reflect the cool-climate regions of Sonoma Coast, Carneros, and the Russian River Valley with balance, structure, and age-worthiness. Decades later, the legacy of Patz & Hall is a testament to friendship, vision, and the belief that truly great wines begin in the vineyard.
