2016 CAIN Cuvee ‘NV16’ Napa Valley

The Cain Cuvée is our most creative endeavor. It’s about the style of Cain and our vision of what classical red wine can be. Drawing from specific vineyards, both mountain and valley, as well as two harvests, we strive to compose a wine of aromatic complexity that is truly silky and sits lightly and refreshingly on the palate. If we have succeeded, the wine will dance on your tongue! _____________________________________________________________________

Winery Notes: The NV16 illustrates perfectly the way in which two vintages blended together can complement one another. 2015 was a moderately warm year with very low yields, while 2016 had higher yields and was cooler. 2016 gave us some lovely, light, perfumed wines, while 2015 plumps it up with roundness and warmth. The signature of the Cain Vineyard comes through clearly, while the vineyards in Rutherford, Oakville, and Carneros each contribute their part.

The result, NV16 Cain Cuvée, has a bouquet of raspberries, red cherries, forest, and earth, but the best is the palate. This one steps lightly and with elegance—mouth filling without being heavy, it slips down easy to a delicate, clean finish. Exactly what we want.

The Cain Wines are not submitted to the normal professional wine critics as they feel that they don’t require reviews in the traditional sense. They rely on distributors and retailers (like me) to hand sell their products and to emphasize the winery’s long standing reputation as a Napa Valley producer with the highest of standards. Wine Merchants West generally offers the wine critics scores and notes to help individuals understand the wines they wish to purchase. Professional scores will most often relay an interpretation of a wines history and quality. To this end I heavily rely on these critics since I can’t hand sell these products as I would in person. As I cannot offer scores on Cain wines, rest assured the Cain wine you are considering buying is of the highest quality as no corners are cut in production. | jp |
