A fiercely independent and audacious man, Louis Gaspard d’Estournel would readily forego convention for the sake of progress.
This proved especially true of his sales practices; rather than depending on Bordeaux’s traditional network of negociants, he chose to personally dispatch his wines to remote places, signing each bottle as a symbol of his emancipation from the system. In 1838, the newspaper Le Producteur reported, “The arrival of a large shipment of wine sent directly to India by the wealthy owner of a vineyard has caused a stir.

Description

From its creation in 1994, Pagodes de Cos has been produced from grapes grown on a clearly identified terroir whose vines are forty years old on average. Each vintage is an excellent introduction to the style of Cos d’Estournel. True to the spirit of Pagodes de Cos, the 2021 vintage is succulent, serious, and sophisticated, a wine that is delightful from a young age. Pronounced notes of blueberry, redcurrant, and strawberry are complemented by smoky, chocolate aromas and a touch of cinnamon that lend a certain complexity, making for a round, elegant, immensely enjoyable wine.

This over-delivers and stands out in the line up. A stunning second wine at 15 years old, impressively textured with soft tannins that are still very much in play. Dense plum in color, this offers layer after layer of black cherry, cassis, smoked earth, graphite and sweet tobacco. Michel Reybier was five years into his ownership at this point with Jean-Guillaume Prats director. They had tightened up selection for the first wine, benefitting the quality of the second as with Petit Mouton just round the corner, and it shows in the concentration and structure. JA

The 2005 Les Pagodes de Cos is a delicious second wine, with soft tannin, a dense ruby/plum/purple color, loads of blackcurrants, cherries and some earth in an easygoing, sexy style. Drink it over the next decade or more.
