Decanter Magazine – 93 Points

This over-delivers and stands out in the line up. A stunning second wine at 15 years old, impressively textured with soft tannins that are still very much in play. Dense plum in color, this offers layer after layer of black cherry, cassis, smoked earth, graphite and sweet tobacco. Michel Reybier was five years into his ownership at this point with Jean-Guillaume Prats director. They had tightened up selection for the first wine, benefitting the quality of the second as with Petit Mouton just round the corner, and it shows in the concentration and structure. JA

Wine Advocate – 90 Points

The 2005 Les Pagodes de Cos is a delicious second wine, with soft tannin, a dense ruby/plum/purple color, loads of blackcurrants, cherries and some earth in an easygoing, sexy style. Drink it over the next decade or more.

Its history dates back to the early 19th century when it was established by Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, a visionary and passionate wine merchant. Cos d’Estournel quickly gained a reputation for producing exceptional wines and became one of the most sought-after estates in Bordeaux.

Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, known as the “Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe,” was fascinated by Indian culture and architecture. Inspired by his travels to the East, he decided to incorporate Oriental influences into the winery’s design and philosophy. This distinctive approach earned Cos d’Estournel the nickname “The Oriental Estate of Saint-Estèphe.”

One of the most iconic features of Cos d’Estournel is the unique building known as Les Pagodes de Cos. Constructed in the mid-19th century, Les Pagodes de Cos stands out with its pagoda-style architecture, blending Eastern and Western elements. However, Les Pagodes de Cos is crafted with the same meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality as its prestigious counterpart.

The wine Les Pagodes de Cos reflects the unique terroir of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. It predominantly comprises Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrives in the region’s gravelly soils. The blend also incorporates Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, carefully chosen to achieve a balanced and expressive wine.
