2012 HENSCHKE Mount-Edelstone Shiraz South Australia

$143.00

Size: 750

The Mount Edelstone vineyard, situated in the Eden Valley, was planted in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas, who founded South Australia. Unusual for its time, it was planted solely to shiraz. The ancient 500-million-year-old soils on the vineyard are deep red-brown clay-loam to clay, resulting in low yields from the nearly 100-year-old dry-grown ungrafted Centenarian vines. First bottled as a single-vineyard wine in 1952, it became recognised as one of Australia’s greatest shiraz wines.

This stunning 60th vintage has incredibly fragrant aromas of ripe plum, blue and black berry fruits, spice, sage and fresh bay leaf with notes of tar and cedar. These aromas follow through to the palate with rich, complex, concentrated dark fruits, spice and herbaceous nuances, tightly wound balanced acidity, textured layers and fine, long velvety tannins with Deep crimson with garnet hues.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2012 Shiraz Mount Edelstone Keyneton Vineyard has aromas of crushed blackberries, mulberries and red and black plums with nuances of smoked bacon, fertile loam and cracked black pepper. Medium to full-bodied, it offers beautiful grace, elegance and intensity on the palate with silky fine tannins and lively acidity, finishing with great length. 97 Points

Saturated ruby. Wild, intensely aromatic bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, incense, smoky Indian spices and vanilla, with a seductive floral quality emerging with aeration. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering intense blackberry and boysenberry flavors, a touch of anise and building spiciness. Velvety and full but lively too, finishing with excellent power and smooth, sneaky tannins that come in late. by Josh Raynolds, July 2014 94 Points
