Firm and focused, with black currant and loamy cedar aromas that lead to densely structured flavors of cherry, espresso and anise, finishing with youthful tannins. Merlot and Malbec. Best from 2013 through 2018. 1,000 cases made.

(85% merlot with 15% malbec, from the cool-climate Grace Benoist Ranch in Carneros): Bright ruby-red. Lively aromas of black cherry, blackberry, crushed cassis and menthol, complicated by espresso and game. Smooth, suave and juicy if youthfully tight-knit, with subtle savory and game nuances from the merlot. An attractive blend with well-integrated acidity and a fine dusting of tannins. This is the coolest malbec site in California, according to winemaker Jon Priest, who uses a bit of merlot to give the wine more weight and palate presence. This wine was not made in either 2009 or 2010, as neither variety got ripe enough. [90 Points]

The 2008 GBR is a blend of 83% Merlot and 17% Malbec from the estate’s Grace Benoist Ranch. Black fruit, tar, smoke, licorice and scorched earth are some of the notes that flesh out in the glass. This gorgeous wine impresses for its inner palate juiciness and depth. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023. [90 Points]
