Winery Notes: Clean and straightforward color. Fruit aromas are quickly framed by firm and luscious tannins. Ample and forthright on the palate, notes including coffee, cocoa, grilled fruit and caramel gradually make their presence known. The overall impressions is of a highly structured and full-bodied wine.

Second Wine of Chateau Haut Brion

  • Model: 1HC9
  • Size: 750

The 2000 Bahans Haut-Brion is fully mature, but I had indicated that back in 2003, giving it an anticipated maturity date of 2005-2016. Its smoky, soft berry fruit and notes of fresh porcini mushrooms intermixed with cigar tobacco and black currants are complex. This complexity is followed by a fleshy, elegant, silky wine to drink over the next 5-6 years.

Haut-Brion can be among the trickiest Bordeaux to taste young, often needing a full decade before the extraordinary complexity that marks this terroir begins to emerge. I was thrilled to see how well both the second wine, Bahans Haut-Brion, and Haut-Brion performed in this tasting, and both scores are slight upgrades. --Robert Parker  Jun/2010

Berry, tobacco and coffee aromas. Medium- to full-bodied, with lots of flavor and a silky and luscious finish. A tasty second wine from Château Haut-Brion. Best after 2007. –JS  Mar/2003

Deep ruby-red. Expressive nose combines black raspberry, chocolate, coffee, tobacco and minerals. Lush, thick and stuffed with smoky fruit, with superb vinosity contributing to the impression of firmness and structure. Here's a second wine that will need a good five years of bottle aging to approach its plane of peak drinkability. I underrated this wine a year ago --Steven Tanzer  88-91 Points Jun/2002
