Winery Notes:  100% Merlot from the Abeja estate (Heather Hill) vineyard and old-vine Bacchus grapes, this is a classic Merlot with purity and balance that shows off the quality of its source. Pomerol-like, this has smooth tannins that frame a plump core of red and blue fruits with hints of warm earth, vanilla bean, and ground espresso for complexity. The influences of French oak ageing are well-integrated, making this a seamless, elegant red to enjoy with beef or game. Quoting Lettie Teague of the Wall Street Journal: "John Abbott of Abeja Winery in Walla Walla, Washington has long been considered one of the best (and most modest) Merlot winemakers in Washington, or any other state for that matter." Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar [90 Points] ~ Bright medium red. Sappy aromas of raspberry, dark cherry and dates, plus a whiff of sexy oak. Silky and broad but also dry and serious for New World merlot, with ripe, sweet berry flavors currently a bit youthfully subdued. Substantial oakiness on the back end gives this wine a touch of early dryness but should harmonize with a year or two of aging. Dec/2012
